THOUGHT BITES - LINGUISTIC INTELLIGENCE

Word intelligence is all about language and the purpose of language is to play around with thoughts, to wander, to wonder, to amuse, to imagine, to analyze, to twist, to change, to innovate, et al. The purpose of language is to sharpen  thinking, which would broaden our views, deepens  our understanding and also makes our expressions richer.

Elements of Word Intelligence
1.       Listening - the ability to receive, understand, comprehend, and respond to verbal instructions, expressions, and communication. Click here to read more about this element. 
2.      Speaking - Speaking is an action where we use words to express our thoughts and feelings. Click here to read more about this element. 
3.      Reading - Reading is a process of decoding symbols in order to construct or derive meaning (reading comprehension). Click here to read more about this element. 
4.      Writing - Writing is the medium of communication through printed matter which represents different signs and symbols. Click here to read more about this element. 

Apart from listening, speaking, reading, and writing what else is the role of language? Why should children learn a language? The response was almost unanimous “to communicate, to express”.
But when asked a child, her reply was, “To talk to myself!”

We use language to THINK,
We use language to THINK, 
Sometimes they link
Sometimes they stink
But whenever we blink
We use language to THINK.
Expressions slink
Communications sink
But almost the whole of our day
We use language to THINK.
  
Until now we were teaching language because we wanted children to learn how to listen, to read, to communicate, and to express. But now all that was rudimentary, just the raw material. We now wanted to teach children language because we wanted them to.

And to be able to do that, we need to befriend language - not become a slave to its rules and grammar, and its correctness and appropriateness. We need to play with the language just as we would play with a friend. We do not need to know everything about language and grammar to befriend it. Instead, if first befriended it and played with it, we would get to know it, not completely but enough to build a strong and fulfilling relationship.

First outdoor with different age kids. The goal was to explore “maths in Traffic”. We began by collecting data at two different signals. We counted vehicles,  categorized them like color, size, shape, brand, and so on. Its time for us parents to go back to school - not to learn new things, but to unlearn - ​ a whole lot of what we have ​been ​unfortunately conditioned with.   Its time ​to question our beliefs, its time for some de-weeding   ​ - to create a better, more organic, more meaningful and vitalizing ecosystem for our children.
