Thought Bite - Five VALUES I would Definitely Develop in My Child

Image
Someone asked  - what values will I teach my child? Here is my FIVE MUST-HAVE lists:  So what values will I teach my child? Here is my  FIVE MUST-HAVE  list:  1. The value of Experimentation (or Trying) I will let my child, who is a born experimenter, keep trying different things in life. The more the child tries, the more the child explores. The more the child explores that more the child learns. The more the child learns, the more the child gathers raw material and tools for life! I will let him fail and treat every failure with as much regard as success and just keep trying. 2. The value of Consciousness (or feelings) I would teach my child to be conscious of his or her feelings. Let my awareness of my feelings be a guide to what I should do and what I should not do. If I am aware of my feelings, my behavior becomes more regulated and my days become more rewarding and joyous. 3. The value of Reflection (or thought) When I think through a situation, ...

Thought Bite - Experiment to know self - Designing Experimentation

19 people from the age of 8yrs to 45 yrs spent three hours to see just one pair of endangered vulture (small things became joy like how they were cleaning their wings, how they took to flight, where they were perching, and so on) spent nine hours in being with rock climbing - while we waited for our turn we observed, some sketched, some learned new techniques, some relaxed while some got indulged into the mathematical calculation of the height of rocks. spent six hours exploring the art of making wooden beads and clay articles - While we got the chance to work on the pottery wheel only for few minutes, we spent an hour observing every detail of the making of clay Ganesha and Horse. While we did all this we waited a lot - waited for our turns, waited for vultures to fly, waited for our turn to make try making beads. We observed each detail of the making of clay horse. We took part in listening to guides in museums. We talked about those in detail.  All this would have been possible ...

Thought Bite - Designing Experimentation - Choices

It began with “design your own festival”. Last time we celebrated Baishaki at Aarohi – it was designed by faculty, we arranged all the resources, food items, music etc. During the session all the adults were busy arranging for material, putting up music, making Lassi and so on............kids danced to the music we had selected………..they waited for Lassi, one child was continuously asking “when is Lassi coming?” Well, we knew what was our mistake, children did not have “ME” in me. We learnt from this mistake and this year we began with “what would you like to do during festival celebration session”. First session was chaotic, kids were confused “how can we? what can we????? They read, they were moving here and there in  utter confusion……….. the second session they came with their own thoughts Within 10 minutes planning was done - how to celebrate, what to celebrate, and who will do what, and within one hour all preparations were done. Different groups for different festivals ...
